The Morning Coffee, Radio 4, and Romeo & Juliet’s Very Unexpected Happy Ending

This morning, while making my coffee, I had Radio 4’s Today programme murmuring in the background. They were running a segment on the Taylor Swift / Travis Kelce New York wedding celebration, complete with an interview from an enthusiastic fan.

And then she said it.

She compared the Taylor Travis love story to Romeo & Juliet… and called it a “happy ever-after.”

Reader, I nearly dropped my mug.

Not out of outrage — more out of that fizzy, irresistible urge to whisper, “Oh no, my dear, that’s not how that play ends.”

It reminded me how often stories get smoothed out in our collective memory. Shakespeare’s tragedy becomes a fairy tale. Heathcliff becomes a brooding romantic hero. And sometimes, balcony scenes get mistaken for blissful endings.

But honestly? I love moments like this. They’re tiny reminders of why I write the kind of stories I do — love stories with history, consequence, grit, and emotional truth. The kind where “ever after” is earned, not assumed.

And yes, I may have muttered something about the Aucourtes having their own, possibly divergent opinions on impulsive declarations at balconies.
